On October 2, 2026, I looked up at Mt. Yotei from Niseko and saw a light layer of snow covering the upper slopes.

That day was later confirmed as Mt. Yotei’s first snow cover of the 2026 season.
Mt. Yotei photographed from the Niseko area on October 2, 2026, the day its first snow cover of the season was confirmed.
Green fields and autumn scenery were still visible below, while winter had already reached the summit.
Blue skies, autumn colors and a snow-dusted Mt. Yotei all appeared in the same landscape.
In this article, I share original photos taken from Niseko on October 2, 2026, along with recent first-snow dates, historical records and an explanation of the difference between first snow cover on Mt. Yotei and the first snowfall in town.

Mt. Yotei’s First Snow Was Confirmed on October 2, 2026
A light layer of snow appeared near the summit
On October 2, I could clearly see a light layer of snow near the summit of Mt. Yotei from the Niseko area.

It was not yet the completely white mountain we see in midwinter. Dark sections of the mountain were still visible beneath the thin layer of snow.

JA Yotei later confirmed that October 2 was the date of Mt. Yotei’s first snow cover in 2026.
The day I stopped to photograph what looked like the first snow of the season turned out to be the confirmed first snow-cover date.
Autumn below, winter above
The snow itself was not the only thing that made the view memorable.
Green grass and autumn-colored fields still covered the landscape below, while the summit of Mt. Yotei had already turned white.
Autumn fields below the first snow-covered Mt. Yotei of the 2026 season.
Since moving to Hokkaido, I sometimes feel like half the year is winter.
Still, this short period when autumn remains below while winter begins on the mountain is one of the seasonal changes I have come to appreciate while living in Niseko.
A different view every time the clouds moved
The sky was bright blue that day, but clouds repeatedly moved across the summit.
The snowy upper slopes appeared and disappeared as the clouds passed, changing the view from one moment to the next.
Blue sky, autumn fields and the first snow of the season on Mt. Yotei.
It was a completely different scene from the deep-white mountain of midwinter — a glimpse of Niseko right between autumn and winter.

Mt. Yotei’s first snow cover in 2026 was also confirmed on October 2.
By coincidence, it matched the average date listed in Kutchan Town’s historical records.

First snow cover and first snowfall are different
In Japanese meteorological terminology, hatsukansetsu refers to the first time snow covers the area around a mountain summit during the cold season.
The first snowfall in a town or lower-elevation area is a separate event.
This means Mt. Yotei can turn white even while the streets, fields and towns around Niseko remain snow-free.

FAQs About Mt. Yotei’s First Snow
When was Mt. Yotei’s first snow in 2026?
Mt. Yotei’s first snow cover of the 2026 season was confirmed on October 2. JA Yotei published the confirmation on October 6. I also photographed the snow-covered summit from the Niseko area on October 2.
When does Mt. Yotei usually get its first snow?
Kutchan Town’s historical records list October 2 as the average date for the observation periods shown in its published data. The actual date varies each year and has ranged from September to late October.
Is Mt. Yotei’s first snow the same as the first snowfall in Niseko?
No. First snow cover refers to snow appearing around the mountain summit, while first snowfall refers to snow or sleet falling in a particular area. Mt. Yotei can therefore turn white before snow reaches the towns below.
Does the first snow stay on Mt. Yotei for the rest of winter?
Not always. In 2024, snow cover was confirmed on October 20 but later melted. JA Yotei reported that the mountain was covered again on October 29.
Can I see autumn scenery and snow on Mt. Yotei at the same time?
Yes, if the timing is right. On October 2, 2026, the summit was covered with snow while green and autumn-colored fields remained below. Conditions can change quickly, so the same view is not guaranteed every day.
