Kutchan Potato Festival 2026 was a lively summer festival held around Kutchan Ekimae Avenue in Hokkaido.
I visited on Sunday, August 2 with my fifth-grade daughter and her friend, staying from around 3:00 p.m. until after the fireworks at about 8:00 p.m. For families, the combination of festival games, food stalls, the Jaga Sennin Odori dance and fireworks made it easy to enjoy several different experiences in one afternoon and evening.

Kutchan Potato Festival 2026: What We Experienced
Kutchan Ekimae Avenue becomes the festival street
Colorful lanterns and decorations stretched along the street in front of Kutchan Station. During the afternoon, the decorations stood out against the summer sky. Later, the illuminated lanterns created a very different atmosphere.
Food stalls, festival games and event areas were spread along the street, so we could explore on foot. For families, this also meant we could switch activities when one area became crowded.
Plenty of festival games for children
My daughter and her friend enjoyed traditional festival activities such as goldfish scooping, super-ball scooping, yo-yo games and kata-nuki candy-cutting. We also saw shooting games, shaved ice, cotton candy and prize stalls.
A kids’ game area operated by the Kutchan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Youth Division was especially busy. Visitors could buy tickets, play games and collect points for prizes. We considered joining, but the area was crowded when we arrived, so we decided to explore somewhere else instead.
Summer snow and the Potato Grab Challenge
The August 2 program included a summer snow attraction. When we visited, children were sliding down a snow slope with sleds. Seeing children play in snow during August felt very fitting for Kutchan, one of Hokkaido’s best-known snow regions.
Another major attraction was the Potato Grab Challenge. A large quantity of potatoes was prepared in the street, and we saw participants filling bags with potatoes. There was also a long line for ticket distribution.
The official 2026 program also listed Free Floury Boiled Potatoes four times during the day. Because I was visiting with two children and the queue was long, we chose not to wait for either potato event.
Jaga Sennin Odori fills the street
In the evening, the Jaga Sennin Odori brought large groups of dancers onto Kutchan Ekimae Avenue. We could watch the procession from close to the roadside, with festival lanterns and decorations above the dancers.
For us, this was one of the moments when the festival felt most connected to the local community. It was enjoyable even without participating in the dance.

We watched the Jaga Fireworks from near Kutchan Station. From our position, the station, the snowman monument, festival lanterns and fireworks could all be seen together.
It was a memorable place for photos because the scene showed more than just the fireworks. However, this was simply where we chose to watch and was not an officially designated viewing area.

Easy to explore from Kutchan Station
The festival spread along the avenue leading from JR Kutchan Station. Food stalls, games, performances and photo spots could be explored on foot from the station area.
Food stalls along Kutchan Ekimae Avenue
We saw a wide range of food, including yakitori, pork skewers, motsu dishes, yakisoba, long fries, fried chicken, beef bowls and shaved ice. At one stall I photographed, several items were priced around ¥300–¥500, although prices varied by vendor.
Tables and chairs were available in several areas. This made it easier to stop for food and give the children a break before continuing around the festival.
Hotel Daiichi Kaikan festival area
Hotel Daiichi Kaikan also had a festival dining area decorated with red-and-white curtains and lanterns. Tables and chairs filled the space, and many visitors were eating there.
A local acquaintance told me they planned to meet friends there for food. However, I only walked through the area and did not buy anything, so I did not confirm the menu, prices or purchasing system.
Official parking and what we experienced
The 2026 official information directed drivers to parking at Kutchan Town Hall or Kutosan Park and warned visitors not to park without permission at nearby shops or commercial facilities.
We were able to park at the Hotel Daiichi Kaikan parking area at around 3:00 p.m. However, I could not confirm it as an official festival parking lot. It was full later in the evening, so future visitors should follow the official parking instructions for that year.

Toilets and a useful rest stop
Temporary toilets were installed at several points around the festival.
We also found a toilet at Kutchan Machi-no-Eki Puratto.
Puratto had festival schedules and 2026 festival fans featuring designs by local elementary school students.
For us, it was a useful place to check information and use the restroom while visiting with children.

For travelers already staying around Niseko, the festival offers a chance to experience a local summer event rather than only visiting sightseeing attractions. If fireworks are your priority, plan for an evening finish instead of treating it as a quick daytime stop.
How We Would Plan a Family Visit
Arrive before the busiest evening period
We arrived at about 3:00 p.m. and had time to walk around before the evening events. Crowds increased later, especially as the dance and fireworks approached.
Choose priority events when visiting with children
The Potato Grab Challenge and some kids’ activities had lines. Instead of waiting for everything, we skipped the busiest queues and let the children choose other games. That worked well for our visit.
Allow extra time if you want the fireworks
For us, staying from mid-afternoon through the fireworks was worth it because the festival changed throughout the day. Families planning a similar visit should also identify a toilet, rest area and meeting point before the evening crowd becomes heavier.

Kutchan Potato Festival 2026 was especially enjoyable for us as a family because the afternoon and evening offered very different experiences. Children could enjoy festival games and snow play, while adults could explore food stalls, watch the Jaga Sennin Odori and stay for the fireworks.
