Snow can arrive as early as October in the Niseko area. In nearby Kutchan, the average first snowfall date is October 20, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
When does snow usually arrive near Niseko?
- First snowfall: October 20

These are JMA average dates for Kutchan, not official dates for every part of Niseko. Actual conditions vary each year.
In 2026, I experienced sleet on October 22, followed by another round of snow on October 28.
Six days apart, two very different scenes — from colourful autumn leaves to streets and ski resort areas covered in snow.
Here is what Niseko actually looked like, through my own photos.
October 22, 2026: Sleet Turns Niseko White
A sudden taste of winter
On Thursday, October 22, snow and sleet fell around the Niseko area.
For a short time, roads and grassy fields turned white. It was still October, but it suddenly looked like winter!
I had also noticed a brief spell of sleet late at night a few days earlier.
But the snow on October 22 didn’t last long either. The following days passed without more snowfall in the places I observed.
Was this Niseko’s official first snow?
The JMA recorded the first snowfall of the season in nearby Kutchan on October 22, 2026 — two days later than its average date.
My earlier sleet sighting was a personal observation in the Niseko area, not an official JMA record for Kutchan.
What stayed with me most was the contrast: fresh white snow among trees still glowing with autumn colour.
October 28: Niseko Looks Much More Like Winter
Six days after the sleet, snow returned on Wednesday, October 28.
This time, it felt much more like winter. I photographed snowy scenery around Mt. Yotei, Hirafu and several Niseko ski resort areas.
Mt. Yotei and Hirafu
Mt. Yotei had a fresh dusting of snow, with a broad white field stretching across the foreground.
Over in Hirafu, snow lined the streets, giving the resort village a distinctly wintry feel.
Snow at Grand Hirafu
At Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu, patches of snow covered the ski slopes and surrounding areas.
Niseko Village and Annupuri
Snow was falling at NISEKO-YO in Niseko Village, turning the shopping and dining area’s streets white.
The base area of Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area was also covered in snow.
Based on the forecast available that day, I wasn’t expecting this snow to stay on the ground throughout winter just yet.
Still, compared with October 22, winter suddenly felt much closer.
All observations and photos in this section are from October 28, 2026. Snow cover and forecasts can change quickly. These photos do not indicate that ski runs were open.
Niseko Snowfall FAQ
Does Niseko get snow in October?
Yes. October snow is not unusual in the Niseko area. Nearby Kutchan typically records its first snowfall around October 20, although the actual date varies each year.
Does sleet count as the first snowfall in Japan?
Yes. The Japan Meteorological Agency includes sleet in its definition of snowfall. Snow does not need to settle on the ground to count as the first snowfall.
Will snow in October stay until winter?
Not necessarily. Early snow may melt between weather systems. In Kutchan, lasting snow cover typically begins around November 21, but this varies from year to year.
Are Niseko ski resorts open when the first snow falls?
Not automatically. The first snowfall does not mean skiing is available. Check each resort’s official opening announcements and lift operations before making plans.
Visiting Niseko in Late October: What to Know
Even if you’re visiting Hokkaido for the autumn colours, winter conditions can arrive unexpectedly.
On October 22, I saw an electronic road sign warning drivers about possible icy surfaces.
Before travelling to Niseko
- Check the latest weather and road conditions.
- Make sure your vehicle has suitable winter tyres when snow or ice is expected.
- Bring warm layers and footwear with good grip.
- Take extra care on mountain roads, bridges and shaded sections.
Snowfall dates and road conditions can differ between Kutchan, Hirafu, Niseko Village and Annupuri.
Don’t assume conditions at one location will be the same across the entire resort area.
Final Thoughts: Autumn Meets Winter in Niseko
On October 22, I watched sleet briefly turn the ground white.
Six days later, snow had returned to Hirafu and the surrounding ski resort areas.
Seeing that change in less than a week made winter feel very close.
If you’re planning a late-October trip to Niseko, you may catch a beautiful mix of autumn colours and early snow.
Just remember that the weather can change quickly. Enjoy the scenery, and come prepared for colder conditions.
