Are the Makkari Shrine cherry blossoms worth visiting during Golden Week?
We visited the Makkari Shrine cherry blossoms with our child during Golden Week 2026. The cherry blossom approach, white torii gate, and view of Mount Yotei made it a beautiful short stop in the Niseko and Makkari area.

That said, Golden Week can be busy, parking fills up quickly, and we did not see restrooms near the shrine. This article shares what we actually experienced, including the cherry blossom condition on May 2, parking, restroom tips, child-friendly notes, omikuji, and what is enshrined at Makkari Shrine.
What to know before visiting Makkari Shrine
A spring photo spot with cherry blossoms and Mount Yotei
Makkari Shrine is known for its cherry blossom approach, where you can enjoy the flowers together with Mount Yotei in the background. It is a good choice for travelers driving around Niseko, Makkari, or Rusutsu who want a short but memorable spring stop.

Cherry blossom condition on May 2, 2026
We visited on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Because it had rained the day before and the wind was a little strong, some petals had already fallen. Even so, many blossoms were still full and pretty enough for photos.
The walk from the first torii gate is beautiful but not short for kids
The approach from the first torii gate to the shrine felt about 500 meters long and took around five minutes on foot. It is the better route if you want to enjoy the cherry blossom avenue, but younger children or kids who do not want to walk far may find it a little long.

The parking area near the shrine was much easier with a child
Our child did not want to walk the full approach, so we used a different route and parked near the side of Makkari Shrine. From there, it was only about 10 seconds on foot to the shrine. However, it became full right after we parked, so Golden Week visitors should expect crowds.

The omikuji and spring details were fun for our daughter
At the hand-washing area, there were cute spring decorations that looked like cherry blossoms. Our fifth-grade daughter also enjoyed drawing a sakura triangle omikuji. It came in a light blue pouch with a purple stone and a lucky fortune marked number 32.

Is it easier by car or public transport?
For families exploring the Niseko, Makkari, and Rusutsu area, traveling by car is the most practical option. Public transport information exists from Kutchan Station by bus toward Toyako Onsen, but with children and cherry blossom season crowds, a car gives you much more flexibility.

Nearby stops to combine with Makkari Shrine
Stop for a restroom before arriving
Since we did not see restrooms around Makkari Shrine, families should stop at a convenience store or rest area before visiting. Doing this first makes the short cherry blossom stop much easier with children.
Easy to combine with a Niseko or Rusutsu drive
Makkari Shrine works well as a short stop while driving around Niseko, Makkari, or Rusutsu. It is not a full-day activity, but it is a good place to enjoy cherry blossoms, Mount Yotei, a quiet shrine visit, and omikuji.
Plan food or rest after the cherry blossom walk
If you walk the full approach from the first torii gate, it can feel like a small outing for kids. Planning a meal or short break afterward makes a Golden Week family drive easier and less tiring.
Helpful tips for visiting with children
Choose your route based on how much your child can walk
If your child is happy to walk, starting at the first torii gate gives you the best cherry blossom approach experience. If your child gets tired easily, going closer to the shrine can make the visit much smoother, as long as parking is available.
Wear shoes that can get a little dirty
When we visited during Golden Week 2026, there were muddy spots and puddles after the rain. Sneakers that can get dirty are safer than white shoes or sandals, especially for children.
Go to the first torii gate if you want the classic photo
Parking near the shrine is easier for worship, but the first torii gate side is better for photos of the cherry blossom approach. We only took photos of the approach, and even that made the visit feel special.

Final thoughts: Makkari Shrine is a lovely Golden Week cherry blossom stop
The Makkari Shrine cherry blossoms were a beautiful spring stop with Mount Yotei, a white torii gate, and a peaceful shrine atmosphere. On May 2, 2026, the blossoms were not in perfect condition because of the previous day’s rain and wind, but they were still very pretty.
For families, the biggest benefits are the short visit time, cute omikuji, and easy car access if you can park nearby. The main things to prepare for are Golden Week crowds, limited parking, no visible restrooms, and muddy spots after rain.
If you want the full cherry blossom approach, start from the first torii gate. If your child does not want to walk far, the route closer to the shrine may be easier. To check the location before you go, you can open Makkari Shrine on Google Maps.
