Hi there! Today I visited Niseko and Kutchan in Hokkaido. It felt like winter finally switched “ON”, so let me show you around! 😊
This morning in Niseko, the temperature was –3°C, but it felt more like –4°C.

Both the weather app and the actual road surface were clearly in full-on winter mode. Route 5 between Niseko and Kutchan had turned into a pale white corridor, with frosted trees and guardrails making it feel like we were driving through a snow tunnel. ❄️

Feels Like –4°C: The Morning When Winter Really Arrived
・Morning in Niseko: –3°C, but it felt closer to –4°C.
・The weather app was already forecasting snow around 8:00 a.m.
・On the road, a mix of packed snow and shiny ice patches made things slippery.
・You can feel your hands gripping the steering wheel a little tighter than usual.
・It was one of those mornings when you know the real winter driving season has begun. ❄️
Route 5: The “White Tunnel” Between Niseko and Kutchan
・The white birch trees and guardrails along Route 5 were all dusted in snow.
・We saw more cars with skis on the roof and lots of rental cars driven by overseas visitors. 🚗🎿
・Driving among those vehicles, you can really feel that ski season is just getting started.
・The road is beautiful but demanding, so keeping your speed low and your distance long is the safest way to go.
Snowman & Construction: Winter Around Kutchan Station
・In front of Kutchan Station, the familiar “Welcome to Kutchan” snowman is there to greet everyone.
・Right beside it, the Hokkaido Shinkansen viaduct and station construction are quietly moving forward, even in snow and wind.
・On some days, trucks and trailers can struggle with the icy surface near the construction area, reminding you how tough winter work is here.
・It’s hard now, but imagining a Shinkansen train arriving here one day makes the future feel exciting.
Local Supermarkets Turning into a Mix of Tourists and Long-Stayers
・Next to Kutchan Station, the Co-op supermarket is packed with groceries, daily items, and some winter wear.
・Along Route 5, MaxValu and Lucky Kutchan are also popular stops for people staying in Niseko.
・Recently, you hear more English and other languages in the checkout lines.
・It’s fun to guess who is here for a long ski stay and who is just passing through for a short winter escape.
Living Here as a Local Mom: Winter Roads in Everyday Life
・On school runs, you see excited visitors and focused construction workers sharing the same roads.
・Niseko is a world-famous resort, but it’s also just a normal town where families go grocery shopping and kids go to school.
・That mix of “holiday destination” and “daily life” is what makes the Niseko–Kutchan area so unique.
・This winter, I’ll keep sharing real-life scenes from Niseko’s snow days, one drive at a time. ⛄️

Direct Buses to New Chitose Airport (Winter Only)
Direct buses to New Chitose Airport operate winter only (early December – late March).
The easiest and most reliable stop to board these buses in Niseko is the Hirafu Welcome Center, where all bus companies stop. You’ll find English information and a heated waiting area there.
Main Bus Stops
- Hirafu: Hirafu Welcome Center (recommended) / Hirafu Intersection
- Hanazono: Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono / Hanazono 308
- Niseko Village: Hilton Niseko Village / Green Leaf Niseko Village
- Annupuri: Niseko Northern Resort Annupuri
- Kutchan: JR Kutchan Station Rotary
Travel Time & Winter Road Tips
The bus ride takes about 3 hours (by car it’s around 2 hours). Because buses make multiple stops and winter roads around Nakayama Pass, Kimobetsu, and Lake Shikotsu can be prone to delays, it’s safer to plan with a generous time buffer.

FAQ (Winter Travel Between Niseko & Kutchan)
Q1. How difficult is it to drive Route 5 between Niseko and Kutchan in winter?
A. It really depends on the day – from “a light layer of snow” to “solid ice”. Winter tyres are absolutely essential, and ideally you should have a 4WD and a driver who is used to snow. Roads are especially icy in the early morning and at night, so keep your speed low and avoid sudden braking or sharp steering.
Q2. Can I travel between Niseko and Kutchan without a car?
A. Yes. In winter, Niseko United runs free shuttle buses and there are local route buses connecting Hirafu and Kutchan. Some accommodations also offer their own shuttle service, so it’s worth checking in advance.
Q3. Which supermarkets are convenient for long stays and self-catering?
A. Around Kutchan Station you’ll find Co-op Sapporo, and along the main road there are MaxValu and Lucky Kutchan. They stock groceries, daily necessities, and even winter gear, making them very handy for longer stays.
Q4. When is the busiest season for tourists and skiers?
A. The main high season is December to March. It gets particularly crowded over New Year, Chinese New Year, and during long weekends in February.
Q5. How will things change once the Hokkaido Shinkansen opens?
A. The Hokkaido Shinkansen (Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto – Sapporo) is scheduled to open around FY2038, and Kutchan will be one of the stops. Access from Honshu will become much easier, and tourism and real estate activity in the Niseko – Kutchan area are expected to grow even more.
